Barnes & Noble This four-DVD set collects all 14 second-season episodes of the popular BBC series, based on the autobiographical books of veterinarian James Herriott, whose vivid reminiscences painted a charming picture of rural British life in the 1930s. Season two finds Herriot (Christopher Timothy) conned into playing a game of cricket, kindly but eccentric vet Siegfried Farnon (Robert Hardy) inexplicably purchasing a flock of guinea fowl, and Siegfrieds brother Tristan (Peter Davison) struggling with woman trouble. All Creatures Great and Small celebrates a bygone era and a way of life considerably less coarse and frenzied than our own. The characters are realistically drawn, warts and all, and their places in the community are clearly defined. Ineffably warm and gently funny, this series offers subtly stated life lessons along with escapist entertainment, making the DVD box set a valuable addition to any home library.
