This three-disc DVD set collects the first 13 episodes of this immensely popular 1978 BBC series, based on the autobiographical books of veterinarian James Herriott, whose vivid reminiscences painted a charming picture of rural British life in the 1930s. The first installment introduces Herriott (Christopher Timothy), an eager young man who travels to the small Yorkshire town of Darraby to secure an apprenticeship with eccentric but kindly vet Siegfried Farnon (Robert Hardy). Subsequent episodes find Herriott readily adapting to the demands of Farnons practice, acclimating himself to the small but intimate community, and courting the beautiful Helen Alderson (Carol Drinkwater). Other characters figuring prominently in the first-season shows include Farnons high-spirited younger brother, Tristan (Peter Davison); the vets gruff housekeeper, Mrs Hall (Mary Hignett); and Darrabys resident doyenne, Mrs. Pumphrey (Margaretta Scott). Lovingly produced by Bill Sellars, All Creatures Great and Small celebrates a bygone era and a way of life considerably less coarse and frenzied than our own. The characters are realistically drawn, warts and all, and their places in the community are clearly defined. Ineffably warm and gently funny, this series offers subtly stated life lessons along with escapist entertainment, making the DVD box set a valuable addition to any home library. You can never get bored with them. I have read and I am still reading Mr. Herriots books. I was inspired by the books but even more by the videos. Mr. Herriot is an inspiration and Mr. Timothy as well. He played the part so well. I think the cast in the videos are the best actors for the videos. They couldnt have picked a better cast. They did a job well done. If I could I would give this title and all the rest 10 stars. Also Recommended: I enjoyed all of the All Creatures Great and Small series. Series 1-6. The movie, All Creatures Great and Small was fantastic as well.A viewer Wonderful programs to watch over and over!Ive read the books, but this takes my enjoyment of Mr. Herriots works to new levels. Visually enchanting, wonderfully acted and directed. These shows themselves represent a bygone television era of warm, lovingly produced stories in the vein of Hercule Poirot and the like. I watch them with my 4-year old son and he adores them. The DVD format provides tremendous picture and sound clarity. Obviously, as a practicing large animal veterinarian, Im keenly interested in many of the diseases and dystocias presented to Skeldale House - but its the human element that makes this such an engrossing series. I cant imagine a cold Friday evening better spent than with a glass or two of sherry and a few episodes of this wonderful series.
