Barnes & Noble 90 DEGREES SOUTH documents one of the most famous expeditions in the annals of exploration: Captain Robert Scotts doomed journey to Antarctica in 1910. After failing in his goal to reach the South Pole before Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, Scott and his companions died of starvation and exposure on their return trip. In 1933 cinematographer Herbert G. Ponting assembled the amazing footage that he shot and developed on the expedition and created this film. Like THE SOUTH, the documentary about Sir Ernest Shackletons Antarctic expedition a few years later, Pontings film is filled with wonderful wildlife footage and breathtaking images -- glittering ice caves, a snow-covered smoking volcano, the great ice barrier shining in the midnight sun. Accompanied by Pontings reverent narration and quotes from the heartbreaking journal Scott left behind, 90 DEGREES SOUTH is in every sense a labor of love, made not only to commemorate a fallen hero, but also to celebrate the unearthly beauty of the frozen continent.
