Barnes & Noble For some people, one Elvis was more than enough. But this darkly humorous, ultra-violent caper flick sports dozens -- among them a handful armed with shotguns and, as the King himself might say, lookin for trouble. In perhaps his most daring role to date, Kevin Costner plays a taciturn, sadistic hood who masterminds the elaborate robbery of a Las Vegas casino during a competition of Elvis impersonators. Costner and his partners -- including Kurt Russell, Christian Slater, and David Arquette -- figure they stand a better chance of avoiding identification and evading pursuers by dressing like Ol Swivel Hips and blending into the crowd. Its an audacious plan, marred by unusually bad luck that sends the bandits scattering in different directions. The heists aftermath provides fertile cinematic ground for director Demian Lichtenstein, who painstakingly details the resulting double-crosses with tongue in cheek. Courteney Cox contributes a nice supporting turn as the two-timing lover of the hapless holdup man Russell, and the other major players, each a leading man in his own right, mesh surprisingly well. But the real kudos go to Costner, whose image-trashing performance gives this over-the-top, blood-soaked shoot-em-up most of its high-octane oomph.
