Barnes & Noble A model of careful craftsmanship and arguably the best dramatic series on network TV today, 24 reinvents itself to a certain degree every year, and that process made the 2004-5 season perhaps the best yet. Beginning some 18 months after the tumult depicted in Season 3, Season 4 finds counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) working outside the system once again and racing the clock to save the country from a devastating terrorist attack. As usual, Bauers eventful day -- depicted in 24 hour-long episodes that unfold in "real time" -- begins with a crisis and metastasizes into a catastrophe. The previously discredited operative, secretly in love with a cabinet members daughter (new series regular Kim Raver), is pressed into service to foil a localized terrorist attack that actually presages a massive assault on the government, coordinated by terrorist mastermind Habib Marwan (guest star Arnold Vosloo, infinitely more frightening than he was in the feature films as The Mummy). In keeping with 24s tradition of interpolating more intimate subplots, the fourth season reunites, at least in CTUs situation room, newly minted supervisor Michelle Dessler (Reiko Ayleworth) and her disgraced husband, ex-agent Tony Almeida (Carlo Bernard), whos been pardoned temporarily so that he can lend assistance. Obviously, there are more twists and turns than we can or should describe, but suffice to say that the shows writers, directors, and actors are all at the top of their respective games. Oh, sure, there are the predictable gaffes with regard to timing (is it really possible to traverse lengthy, car-choked L.A. boulevards in a matter of minutes?), but on balance this season of the popular thriller manages even better than its illustrious predecessors to keep viewers on the edges of their seats. It gets our highest recommendation. Ed Hulse Interested in the song lyrics? - Check out themostlyrics.com! Looking For A DVD? - Check out dvd-a-rama.com! |
